Under firs and cedars, gutters clog two or three times a year. Our small-hole guards keep leaves and most needles out, so they need a clean every few years instead. We clear your gutters out first, and we’ll tell you honestly if your house doesn’t need guards at all. Gutter guard installation across Vancouver, Surrey and the North Shore.

Why Lower Mainland gutters clog
Maples drop their leaves once, in autumn. Douglas fir, western red cedar and hemlock shed through the year, and their needles knit together with roof grit and moss into a mat that holds water. Vancouver gets 1,457 mm of rain a year across 161 rain days, and North Vancouver gets closer to 2,500 mm. So a gutter that's half blocked in March is overflowing by November.
A fir needle is thinner than a pencil lead. It drops straight through a standard screen hole and lodges upright, and then it catches everything else. That's why the guard from the hardware store didn't work.
When the gutter fills, water spills over the back edge as well as the front. It soaks the fascia board and runs down behind the siding. Rotten fascia and stained soffits usually start here.
A plugged downspout dumps the roof's rain right beside the house instead of carrying it away. Wet crawlspaces and basement seepage often trace back to one blocked downspout.
Under big conifers, one clean a year doesn't keep up. That means two or three trips up a ladder every year, on the wettest, most slippery part of the house.
The honest answer
Guards are a good buy on some houses and a waste of money on others. This is how we decide, and we'll tell you which kind of house yours is before you spend anything.

Ask if guards make senseSmall holes vs micro-mesh vs screens
Gutter guards, leaf guards, eavestrough guards: they're all the same thing under different names. There are six kinds on the market, and most were designed for maple and oak country. Here is how each one handles what actually falls on a Lower Mainland roof.
| Guard type | Fir & cedar needles | Heavy rain | In our climate | Do we install it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Small-hole guardSmall holes, fastened to the gutter | Keeps most out | Drains well if the top isn't matted | A clean every few years under trees | We install |
| Micro-meshVery fine mesh over the gutter | Keeps nearly all out | Drains well if kept clear | Needs brushing off about once a year under conifers. Costs more, slower to fit | Not offered |
| Large-hole screenBasic snap-in or wire screen | Slip through the holes | Drains well | Fine under maples only | We don't fit |
| Reverse-curve hoodSolid cover, water curls under the lip | Needles and moss wash in | Can overshoot in a downpour | Built for leaf country, not ours | We don't fit |
| Foam insertPorous block that sits in the gutter | Trapped in the foam | Slows down as it clogs | Holds moss and breaks down in a few winters | We don't fit |
| Brush insertBottle-brush bristles in the gutter | Held in the bristles | Fine until it packs | Holds needles and moss in place | We don't fit |
Where we install
We're based in Surrey and install gutter guards across the Lower Mainland. The houses that get the most out of them are the ones under big trees, and around here that's a lot of houses.
Dunbar, Kerrisdale, Point Grey, Shaughnessy, Arbutus Ridge and Kitsilano. Mature trees over older rooflines, where the gutters fill fastest.
Lynn Valley, Deep Cove, Edgemont, Capilano, Seymour and Ambleside. These are forest-edge lots on the wettest side of the region, with needles and rain in the biggest volumes.
Fleetwood, Fraser Heights, Panorama Ridge, Sullivan, Morgan Creek and Ocean Park. Our yard is on 138 Street, so most Surrey installs are a short drive.
Burke Mountain, Westwood Plateau, Burnaby Mountain and Walnut Grove. These are hillside lots backing onto forest, where the gutters catch everything that comes down the slope.
Why All Canadian
A guard over a dirty gutter just hides the problem. Every install starts with the gutters cleared out and the downspouts checked.
Leaves stay out and so do most needles. Cut to length and fastened section by section, corners and downspouts included
Guards fasten to the gutter, not under the first row of shingles, so the roof itself isn't touched.
If one clean a year would do the job, we'll say so and book that instead. Guards are only worth it on the right house.
$2M liability and WorkSafe BC coverage. Two- and three-storey ladder work is our risk, not yours.
Measured from satellite imagery and a few questions. The per-foot price is on this page, and your quote is your price.
How it works
We measure the gutter run and check the tree cover on satellite imagery, then send a price. Most homes don't need a site visit.
Gutters cleared out and downspouts checked. Guards cut to length and fastened section by section, corners and downspouts included.
Before and after photos of each run, plus what to watch for so the guards keep draining.
No surprises on the day
Everything below is part of the install, not an add-on we mention once we are already parked outside.

Common questions
It's priced by the foot, at about $6.50 to $9 a foot installed, with clearing out the gutters first included. A typical two-storey house here has 140 to 180 feet of gutter, so most installs land around $900 to $1,650. The estimator on this page gives a range for your house in about twenty seconds, and the firm price comes from your address.
On the right house, yes. If a fir, cedar or pine hangs over the roof and you're cleaning gutters two or three times a year, our guards cut that to a clean every few years and stop the overflow in between. If there are few trees and one clean a year keeps up, guards cost more than they save, so book the clean instead. Most people buy guards to get off the ladder and stop worrying every time it pours.
It depends on the hole size. Standard screens have holes big enough for needles to drop through and stand up in, and then they catch everything else. Foam and brush inserts trap needles inside the gutter. The guards we install have small holes that keep most needles out. They sit on top and dry out, and the odd one that gets through is why it's a clean every few years rather than never.
Less, not never. With our guards, a house under trees usually needs a clean every few years instead of two or three times a year. Anyone promising you will never touch your gutters again is overselling. What changes is that you are no longer scooping out a packed gutter every autumn and spring.
Our small-hole guards drain well in Lower Mainland downpours as long as the top isn't matted over. Reverse-curve hood guards are the type that can overshoot: in a hard downpour the water runs past the lip instead of turning into the gutter. If your gutters overflow now, a blocked downspout or a gutter pitched the wrong way is the more likely cause, and a guard will not fix either. We check both before we install.
Some guards are designed to slide under the first row of shingles, and lifting or fastening through shingles can put a shingle warranty in question. Ours fasten to the gutter itself, not under the roofing, so the shingles are not touched. If your roof is new, tell us the brand when you call.
For most houses here, a small-hole guard. It keeps leaves and most needles out, drains well and cuts cleaning to every few years. Micro-mesh stops even more, but it costs more, takes longer to fit, and its fine mesh needs brushing off about once a year under conifers, so we don't offer it. Standard large-hole screens are fine for maples but let needles through. Foam and brush inserts hold needles and moss and break down within a few winters in our climate.
Usually, yes. Standard 5-inch and 6-inch aluminum gutters, the kind on most houses here, both take them. The gutters have to be sound, though. If they sag, leak at the seams or hold standing water, we tell you before we quote, because a guard on a failing gutter is money wasted. Half-round and older steel gutters need a look first.
A guard fastened to the gutter lasts for many years. Foam inserts last a few winters in our climate before they break down, and plastic snap-in screens go brittle in the sun. How long installation takes depends on the house, but most homes are done in a single visit, clean included.
No. LeafFilter is a micro-mesh guard sold by a national company that prices through an in-home appointment and does not publish its rates. We install small-hole guards and we are a local crew based in Surrey. You get a price range on this page and a firm quote from your address, usually without a site visit.
You can, and on a single-storey house with good gutters it is a reasonable weekend job. Three things trip people up. The gutters have to be completely cleaned out first. A lot of the cheap snap-in screens have holes big enough for fir needles. And cutting and fastening around corners, joins and downspouts is where DIY installs leak or lift. On a two-storey house it is also a lot of time on a ladder. Get our quote and compare.
No. Ice dams come from heat escaping through the roof and melting snow that refreezes at the cold eave. That is an attic insulation problem, not a guard problem, and ice dams are less common on the coast than inland. The real winter concern here is wet, heavy snow sitting on the gutter. Guards fastened to the gutter carry it, while plastic snap-in guards can crush or pop out.

One crew, one call
Guards go on after the gutters are cleared. If the roof or the siding is due as well, doing it in the same visit saves a second setup.
